When you go out to buy perfume, there are always a number of different sizes of bottle available, and different price tags for each fragrance. Not only that, but a few are labeled ‘cologne’ and some ‘perfume’ – and there is often a large price gap between the two. Cologne is basically a more diluted version of perfume.

When it comes to buying cologne it usually comes in an atomizer, making it easier to apply. Perfume is often a lot smaller in size. You can also have a look at the bottles for the words perfume/ parfum or cologne.

Perfume is mixed together with alcohol, which means that it will start to evaporate after you apply it. The base note is what stays on your skin for longer periods of time, and is the smell that will linger in a room once you have left it. Cologne contains a lot more of the alcohol than perfume and is much weaker, but it will still leave a smell. The difference between the two lies in the cost as well as how you should apply it.

When it comes to applying perfume you have to make sure you don’t use so much to make it overpowering. Just make sure you spray the atomizer the same as you would normally with perfume, on pressure points found on your wrist and behind the ear. There is no need to keep reapplying as the scent will stay with you throughout the day.

When it comes to cologne you can use a little more, but still be careful not to use too much. This product normally evaporates faster, and when we become used to the way it smells we will often add more just because we can’t smell it ourselves anymore. But remember others will still be able to smell it. When you spray cologne, do so on the neck, wrists and hair and leave it.

When it comes to choosing the right product, price is always a factor. Most people prefer cologne because it costs less, comes in larger sizes and also comes with an atomizer. However, perfume is more concentrated and does not come with an atomizer, usually more expensive. Both of these products will work effectively, though they may smell differently on different people. Due to the content of alcohol, and the time it takes to evaporate, perfume may also end up smelling differently to cologne.

There’s also a different product to cologne and perfume known as splash. This contains fragrance, but mainly just contains water and alcohol. These kind of products are supposed to be used much more liberally than traditional cologne and perfume, due to the alcohol it won’t be overpowering but it will feel cool on the skin when applied.

When you are putting on your scent, whether this is for going to work or a night out, you should be sure you understand the differences between perfume and cologne. It’s important to apply it correctly to make a good impression without the smell being overpowering.
