Perfume has always been something expensive to use throughout history. However, there are now many different types of perfume to choose from in stores and online, with many different price tags. But is buying the cheapest kind really giving you the best deal?

One thing that can make your decision more difficult is that there are always new fragrance products coming out. For example, just a few days ago I came across a product known as a soufflé – basically this was just a fragrant cream. The problem is that there is no set rule in place for how much scent needs to be included in a product for it to be labeled as perfume.

However, there are a few ways that you can stop yourself getting confused. When it comes to any liquid that you apply to your body, perfume is the strongest you can buy. Sometimes the French name ‘parfum’ is used to describe this product, which has the highest percentage of scent of all perfume products.

The truth is that you cannot just use pure scent. It always needs to be mixed with another product. If pure scent was used it is likely it would irritate most types of skin. A fragrance mix is a good way of stabilizing the scent and making it easier to apply. Out of all products, perfume has the highest concentration of the scent compared to those mixing ingredients.

Bottles of perfume are normally small but high in price. Next in line comes Eau de Parfum, which is written in French. This is not as expensive as pure perfume, and the smell is not as powerful. However, this could be the right product for you, and many of the top scents are this kind of perfume. Next is Eau de Toilette, which contains much less scent in comparison to its other ingredients. This means you will need to touch up the scent more often than other perfumes, though some people prefer it for its lighter smell and lower price tag.

The weakest type of the list is cologne. This has the least scent, though it is also the least expensive type of fragrance. It does not last as long or smell as strong as other products, but it can still convey a similar scent. You can simply reapply it if it wears off too quickly. There are also a number of scented creams and lotions, sold under a wide range of different names.

Some of the names of these products include butters, soufflés, sachets and even more. There are no rules as to how much scent these have to include compared to lotion, though you should remember that the scent will last longer if the base is oily. When it comes to buying perfume, your choice will come down to price as well as how strong you want to smell. Whilst parfum is most expensive, it will last for hours where cologne will not.

I want to buy discount perfume, miss dior cherie leau to be precise, but I don’t want to pay $80 for it. I’m looking at perfume.com and fragrancenet.com, but I’m wary…the description says “unboxed”. What does this all mean? Will I get the same perfume as in Nordstroms?

Suggestions for buying perfume online or better sites than mine would be helpful.
I read a description of what “unboxed” meant on the site…it says “Save more with unboxed fragrances. These are the exact same, authentic, brand name fragrances but the original packaging was damaged or torn in transit, or simply looked less than perfect. Since we can buy them for less, we pass those savings on to you.”

We normally use the word “notes” in relation to music or to taking down notes. But did you know that perfumes are also made of a variety of notes that come together to create that special blend we call perfume?

That is one of the reasons why the perfume you wear gives out different smells at different times. The smell you get as soon as you spray the perfume on you is quite different to what you get after about 30 minutes have passed and then again during the course of the day, it can change even more. This happens when the perfume starts to evaporate and the “different notes” start to come out.

We are always told never to buy perfume after the first whiff of it. You have to let it dry on your wrist and then wait for it to evaporate before smelling it again to actually know what your bottle of perfume really smells like. It so happens that the different notes come out in stages and it’s the combination of all these notes that makes your bottle of perfume give out that heavenly smell.

Now let’s see, what these notes are:

In perfumery language, they are called the Top Notes, the Middle Notes and the Base notes. Easy to remember. But what do they mean?

Top notes are what you get when you open the bottle and take a sniff. This is supposed to be the most important smell as far as the manufacturer is concerned because if that first sniff is not to your liking, you are obviously not going to buy it. The top notes therefore are strong and vibrant and made to cause that first good impression. The first smell however does not last long because it evaporates rather quickly or in a matter of 10-15 minutes the most.

Next are the Middle Notes which really is the heart and body of the perfume and helps to produce the bouquet of the fragrance. The middle notes are less strong and vibrant and lasts longer than the Top notes and appears after about 30-45 minutes after applying the perfume. It’s the Middle Notes that help to balance the different blends of the perfume.

Last but not least are the Base Notes. The Base notes of a perfume hold the fragrances together. The ingredients that go into making the Base notes have the tenacity to hold the Top and Middle Notes together and stop the perfume from evaporating too quickly. The Base notes are supposed to be the dominant part of the perfume which gives the final and unique smell to a perfume.

As you can see, so many components go into the making of that dreamy bottle of perfume we treasure so much. However, it’s only the expert who can separate these different notes and the structure of a particular perfume. For you and me, simply knowing the different notes of a perfume would suffice to help us select that very special fragrance of our choice.

•    You can put rose petals or other flowers to the essential oils, to add different scents to your perfume.

Note:
Keep in mind that when making the mixture, watch closely the ratio between the three main ingredients of alcohol, water and oils, as the oils are strong and even a slight miscalculation will result in a completely different scent. When attempting to replicate a successfoully made batch, precision is mandatory.
